Christian living

Resolutions continued.

Mid-January and it seems no matter where I go, people are still talking about resolutions.

The health club. Bus stop. Online. Magazines.

As I contested a few weeks back, I think resolutions should be born from a desire to have Christ change you, not a will power to change yourself. That requires faith, not just resolve.

Nonetheless, as I also mentioned, it is everywhere around us, so if you can’t help but speak the resolution language, there are some other great viewpoints on the subject out there.

One such viewpoint comes from an amazing author, Donald Miller. I loved his book, Blue Like Jazz, and it was filled with examples of extreme grace, courage and transparency (i.e., I’m not a perfect Christian!) Recently I checked out his blog in which he wrote about none other than, an alternative to resolutions! This two part blog is very worthwhile, suggesting that you can write your own story and therefore make changes in your life more attainable as well as meaningful.

And while we’re on topic, I would be remiss if I didn’t give you an update on my daughter’s progress with her “Top 10 List” (Resolutions list!) We were saying prayers the other night, after which she said, “Mom, I think I’m doing pretty good on my list – except for the being nice one. I could use more work on that.” Well. If that wasn’t just the most humble, honest evaluation of a resolution I’ve ever heard.

And as for the bed, most days it’s made…

So I remind myself of these truths.

Perfection is never attainable.
Change is hard.
Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we cannot see.
